ArtsUp Creative Flow Photo Walk

In conjunction with my recent exhibit at the ArtsUp gallery in Downtown Spartanburg, I was asked to lead a photo walk as part of their Creative Flow series, which they do each month. We met at the gallery on Friday evening, and then walked around downtown for a bit. I discussed my approach to photography, which is essentially exactly what we were doing - walking around downtown taking pictures. The goal is to slow down and experience our surroundings by paying attention to any mood or feeling that may be invoked and trying to capture that with a camera. Participants were instructed to bring a camera, a phone, even a sketch pad. It’s not about perfection.

Personally, my photography is for me. I seldom do client work, so I’m not concerned with delivering a flawless product. I often walk around for hours with very few “keepers.” The act of observing and trying to capture or convey a feeling is what it’s all about for me.

After the walk, everyone was asked to share a few of their favorite photos from the walk and I would publish them here. We had several people share some great photos, and I think everyone had a good time. Some of the group even discussed making this a regular thing - so stay tuned for that!
