Churches in Toulouse
Toulouse has many historic Christian churches, with their origins going as far back as the third century CE. Saturnin, or Saint-Sernin, was the first bishop of Toulouse and was buried there after being killed by pagan priests in 257 CE. Basilique Saint-Sernin was constructed over his burial plot in the fourth century. Today, Basilique Saint-Sernin is one of the largest Romanesque buildings in the world. It is also one of the largest brick buildings in the world.
After visiting Saint-Sernin, I strolled around Toulouse for a few hours, dodging rain showers by ducking into a few coffee shops and restaurants before heading to another church, Couvent des Jacobins. With construction beginning in 1230 CE, the Couvent des Jacobins was influential in the development of the Southern French Gothic style of architecture. Even though it was undergoing renovation work at the time of my visit, making some areas inaccessible, it is a stunning building that I look forward to revisiting next year. I only had time to visit these two churches, but there are a lot of photos between the two.
