Droitwich Spa is a beautiful little town located about 20 miles southwest of Birmingham in Worcestershire. Since we were traveling by train, Droitwich has the closest train station to our destination for the day, Cooksey Green. I’ve been there a few times now, and always enjoy exploring the town a bit before taking a car out to the village.

Droitwich Spa is known for its natural brine springs used for salt production and salt baths since Roman times. The brine contains 2.5 pounds per imperial gallon of salt, which is 10 times greater than sea water. There are parks alongside the canal that goes through the town brimming with water fowl. The town center is filled with a wide array of shops, pubs, and restaurants. The town provided a relaxing change of pace after being in larger cities over the last several days. Droitwich Coffee Culture

This local coffee spot and bakery is a delightful place for a pick-me-up and people watching.

Saltworkers

This sculpture commemorates the heritage of the generations of families involved in the salt industry. The building in the background, The Raven Hotel, suffered a fire that gutted the building in August of 2025. The developer who had been converting it to housing and retail space hopes that it can still be saved.

"Good Bones"

Many of the buildings in Droitwich Spa date back to the 1500s. They may not be as straight as they once were, but they’re still standing and are still being used.

Emily

We met Emily, her mum, and the family pup while taking a break at Droitwich Coffee Culture, then we ran into them again in Vines Park, so I asked to take their photo. Emily is now an international journalist based in Berlin, but was home for a family visit. We met lots of friendly people on this trip.
